In order to get anything like IDrive or Backblaze’s level of service, you’ll have to pay more. The service’s consumer offerings may seem affordable at first glance but make sure you read the fine print. Subscriptions are also on the pricey side, so only get SpiderOak if protecting your data from prying eyes is your top priority.Ĭarbonite used to be synonymous with cloud backup software but it still has a rich feature set. SpiderOak is known for its security and the service encrypts your data with a unique key that only you have, so don’t lose it. However, there aren’t any mobile-device backups or any drive shipping options and CrashPlan’s networked-drive backups aren’t available for Windows. Although it’s rather complicated and can be expensive for the average user, it gives you more options than the competition.ĬrashPlan for Small Business may not be for home users and costs $10 per month per machine but for the price, you’ll get an unlimited cloud backup space, extensive security and scheduling options along with very fast speeds. This is the best cloud backup service if you have a single Mac or PC and don't want to worry about the details.įor more on which solution better fits your needs, check out our analysis of whether IDrive or Backblaze is right for you.Īcronis is our top pick for power users as it offers a wide assortment of useful features. Our pick for the best value is Backblaze as you can get unlimited storage for only $70 per year though the service only backs up one machine (and an external hard drive) per subscription. It can back up an unlimited number of PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets for a reasonable price which makes IDrive the best choice if you have multiple computers and phones. However, if you lose that key, the service can’t help you recover your data, so be sure to store it somewhere safe.īased on our own extensive testing, our Editor’s Choice is IDrive ($3.98 for the first year for Tom’s Guide readers). They also all let you encrypt your data using your own private key. Here’s more on the merits of cloud services versus external hard drives as backup solutions.Įach of the cloud backup services we’ve tested - Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office/True Image, Backblaze, Carbonite Safe, CrashPlan for Small Business, IDrive Personal and SpiderOak One - uses industry-standard encryption on their own servers to protect your data. Cloud backup services provide the same peace of mind for consumers. Even with an external backup drive hooked up to your PC or as a stand-alone backup device on your home network, it could still fall victim to a flood, fire or theft, leaving you with nothing.Īs a result, many enterprises and even small businesses rely on “off-site” backups to minimise the threat of physical disasters. Each of these services constantly copies the data from your computer (or even multiple computers) to cloud storage servers elsewhere in the world that can be easily reached from anywhere you can get internet access.Ĭloud backup is necessary to have as you can’t always count on local backup drives to protect your data. The best cloud backup solutions can help you avoid dealing with data loss.

8/5/2023 0 Comments Ring around the rosie meaningThe earliest version of the song that bears a close resemblance to the modern version comes from the 1881 edition of the nursery rhyme book Mother Goose or, the Old Nursery Rhymes, written by the English collector of folktales and nursery rhymes, Kate Greenaway (lived 1846 – 1901). Stephens, an American novelist whose book The Old Homestead contains one of the earliest known mentions of a version of the song “Ring around the Rosie” in English Here is the version of the song from the novel:ĪBOVE: Portrait of Ann S. Stephens (lived 1810 – 1886), which was published in 1855. Possibly the earliest recorded version of the song in English comes the novel The Old Homestead by the American author Ann S. This article mentions that there was a game played by children called “Ring o’ Roses” that involved the children getting into some kind of “ring,” but it makes no mention of a song involved as part of this game. There she stood, graceful as young faun, her hair parted from the forehead, and flowing in ringlets about her neck, while with downcast eyes and compressed lips, she received the proffered kiss.” “Indeed it is whispered that the object of this gathering is the celebration of her birth day-per consequences, she has been elected mistress of ceremonies, which comprise, among other things, the celebrated “ Ring o’ Roses.” It was laughable to see the little yellow-haired, butter-chopped laddie take her out of the ring. The article is a description of some of the games played by children, written by an adult who had observed them. The earliest possible reference to the song in English that I am currently aware of is a mention in an article from the Brooklyn Eagle dated to 17 March 1846. Here is a translation of this verse into English: This is incorrect, however the earliest known version of the song is a German version originally printed in 1796 that goes as follows: Furthermore, we have a great deal of evidence that runs directly contrary to the popular interpretation of the song as being about the Black Death.įor instance, an underlying assumption behind the notion that the song is about the Black Death is that the song must have been composed at a time when the Black Death was prevalent. We have absolutely no solid evidence whatsoever that the song “Ring around the Rosie” bears any connection to the Black Death. This all makes for a spooky campfire story, but the truth is far less sordid. Not old enough to have been composed at the time of the Black Death There is a popular legend claiming that, supposedly, the “ring around the rosie” mentioned in the first line of the song is actually a description of the buboes on the plague victims’ bodies, that the “posies” from the second line were flowers collected to cover up the stench of rotting corpses, that the “ashes, ashes,” from line three is referring to cremation, and that the “we all fall down” at the end is referring to everyone dying from the plague. Here are the lyrics to the version of the song that is most widely known in the United States: In case you are unfamiliar with the song “Ring around the Rosie,” you should know that it is a popular children’s nursery rhyme throughout the Anglophone world. Although this may make for a good story, it is, in fact, totally false the song “Ring around the Rosie” did not even first appear until centuries after the Black Death had been effectively eradicated in England. A popular urban legend that has been circulating for decades now claims that the beloved children’s nursery rhyme “Ring around the Rosie” is actually about the Black Death. 8/5/2023 0 Comments Cityville game on facebookCinicolo said the company will operate CityVille Hometown as a service, rolling out new features periodically. In the coming days, CityVille Hometown will be ready in five languages. The game rolls out as early as this week in Canada and in other iPhone markets across the globe in the coming weeks. Cinicolo said the company has “an impressive content pipeline” of games coming in the future. With somewhere around 2,000 employees, Zynga has lots of development talent available to make more and more games. But it’s also a byproduct of the company’s big acquisition spree, during which it has bought a company a month for the past year. Zynga’s increased pace of introducing new games may be sign that an IPO filing is near. Cinicolo said that the biggest difference between CityVille Hometown and Zynga’s older Mafia Wars game, which Cinicolo managed, is the amount of narrative storytelling in the new game. That style of using cute characters has become common in recent Zynga games such as Hanging with Friends and Empires & Allies. The characters - Kate, Hilda, and Bert - were created to make players feel welcome even if they aren’t gamers. You use those to stock your businesses, and your friends can visit your town. You build farms and cultivate crops to get supplies. In the game, the mechanics are similar to CityVille’s. It’s more about setting your town apart than getting the biggest town.” “You can share that town with your friends. “It’s all about creating your hometown that represents you,” Cinicolo said. The game is free to play, where players can play for free and pay real money for virtual goods in the game such as cool buildings. Rather, Zynga wants you to build a homey place, where you put your own personal stamp on everything, Cinicolo said. But the game isn’t all about splashy graphics. The game runs as a native application on the iPhone and iPad so that it can take advantage of the graphics of each device and run at the fastest possible speed. “We looked at CityVille on the web and thought about how we can give our players the best possible CityVille experience on mobile,” he said. 8/5/2023 0 Comments Adobe scanned document editorThis is especially useful because many people are already most comfortable editing documents in the Microsoft Word format. When finished, you can save it as a PDF again (although according to Microsoft, saving it as a PDF is not supported in Word 2013). However, the more recent 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, and Microsoft 365 versions allow you to open a PDF and then make specific edits to the piece as a Word document. In the past, versions of Microsoft Word were limited to saving a document in or out of the PDF format, and that was about it. If you use Microsoft Office, then you already have access to a versatile PDF document editor. Adobe’s editing options also include reordering pages, page rotation, annotations, page cropping, page removals, and being able to split PDFs into separate files. It even has the ability to merge multiple PDF files. It has an array of text-editing options, and can instantly convert and save scanned documents to PDF. This was a way of remaining connected with traditional practices and ways of living that allowed the Native American identity to flourish and endure. Many Natives during this evangelistic period denied Christianity entirely and another road emerged, the Indian Road. The sad truth is, this is just but one example of the MANY injustices done to Native Americans in ‘taking the Jesus Road.” Many Indigenous people to this day are still unable to speak about these tragedies that they endured firsthand and for those that are speaking out, the pain and lasting implications are poignant to say the very least. The results from this have and continue to bring tears to the eyes of onlookers at the injustices done in the name of evangelism in a very dark chapter of American history. government efforts to eradicate the languages, identities and cultural practices of Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians,” (Schatz, ). This recently came to light in a heartbreaking way as “Interior Secretary Deb Haaland advocated for a Truth and Healing Commission to examine past U.S. This evangelical movement quickly became known as the ‘Jesus Road.’ For many, ‘taking the Jesus Road,’ meant an utter and complete denial of Native American identity so that ‘salvation’ could be achieved in the whitewashing of Indigenous Peoples. In fact, some argue that that fateful year of 1492 was the beginning of a momentous change motivated by exploration and false doctrines of “Inter Caetera," that authorized Spain and Portugal the ”holy” right to colonize, convert, and enslave the Americas and its Native peoples as subjects. The language of this blog title may seem a bit strange to some, for others it may seem more like an oxymoron, and then there will always be those who have no clue to the hidden indicators that lie beneath the surface of these words “Finding God on the Indian Road.” The blunt and sad truth is that the Christian church has had a very tumultuous past with Native American peoples over the past couple of centuries. 8/5/2023 0 Comments A quiet place streaming onEmily Blunt (Evelyn Abbott) John Krasinski (John. The ship sank during a storm, and Matthias and Nina fell in love while trying to find civilization. Nina had been a Grisha soldier of the Ravkan Second Army captured by Matthias with his Fjerdan drüskelle party and put on a ship to Fjerda for trial and eventual execution. Matthias assists, letting them finally talk about her betrayal. The crew prevail, but Nina recognizes one of their assailants as an old friend and, troubled by the two Grisha's deaths, decides to stay behind to bury them. Upon reaching Fjerda, two Grisha on jurda parem attack the group. After finding and freeing Yul-Bayur from the White Island, on the inner ring, they will exit from the embassy sector. Kaz explains his rescue plan to the crew: they will enter the Ice Court as prisoners, cross to the embassy sector through the roof and disguise themselves as foreign dignitaries during a festival. As they are about to sail from Ketterdam, the crew repels an ambush by rival gangs after torturing a gangster, Kaz learns that gang leader Pekka Rollins, the man responsible for his brother Jordie's death, is also after the scientist. Kaz also enlists Wylan Van Eck, Jan Van Eck's runaway son, as a demolitions expert and leverage if Van Eck reneges on their deal. Together, they break Matthias out of prison, who agrees to help in exchange for a pardon that would enable his reinstatement as a drüskelle. Kaz agrees for a hefty price and starts recruiting a crew: Inej Ghafa, his right-hand spy he had saved from a pleasure house called the Menagerie two years before Nina Zenik, a Grisha Heartrender, who joins upon learning of his intention to free and employ Matthias Helvar, a former Fjerdan drüskelle (Grisha-hunter) detained at Hellgate Prison because of Nina and Jesper Fahey, a Zemeni sharpshooter with a gambling addiction. Wealthy merchant Jan Van Eck divulges the results of Hoede's experiment to 17-year-old criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker and tasks him with rescuing its inventor, Bo Yul-Bayur, from the Ice Court, an unbreachable military stronghold in Fjerda, and prevent the drug's existence from being exposed to the world. She escapes after paralyzing Hoede and some guards, but is found dead days later. The drug enhances her abilities, allowing her to control and manipulate human minds. In Ketterdam, the capital of Kerch, Councilman Hoede tests a drug called jurda parem on a Grisha Healer. 8/5/2023 0 Comments Grabit nzbWe would like to point out that the interface feels a bit crowded: Some other newsreaders, like for example, the Newshosting newsreader, feel more clear. You can also choose to manually import an NZB from within the client by clicking “NZB Import”. This kind of automatic processing is very common these days, and GrabIt handles the job just fine. Click “OK”, and GrabIt will download the files, automatically very and repair them if necessary, extract them, and present you with the downloaded material, all ready to use. You can simply doubleclick an NZB file within Windows, and the software will automatically open and ask you to confirm. Right from the start off, GrabIt can be used as a “normal” Usenet downloader as is common today. Features And Usability: How Easy Is It To Use? We compiled a configuration guide with detailed instructions on all important settings, so be sure to take a look if you want to customize GrabIt for your needs: Read our GrabIt configuration guide here 2. To do that, right-click on the name of your server in the list to the left and change it as you see fit. We recommend you increase the amount of connections and activate SSL however. Note: If you don’t want to use GrabIt as your primary newsreader, uncheck the box in the installer titled “Associate GrabIt with NZB files”. After entering this information, which you get from your Usenet service after signing up, the software does a quick update of its newsgroup database.Ĭlick on “No”, and GrabIt will be up and ready to use. A Mac-version is “still a work in progress” and will come with the all-new 2.0 version.Īfter downloading and running the installer, which does not contain any adware or additional offers by the way, GrabIt asks you for your Usenet server information, such as server address and login credentials. Currently, the software is only available for Windows, and works fine with the latest version, Windows 8.1. You can get the software on the official website at, where a big “Free Download”-button leads the way. So, let’s dive right in and see how GrabIt is holding up in 2015. The current version at the time of testing is 1.7.3 beta. Developed by Ilan Shemes, it has been updates ever since. One of the reason for this popularity is that it is completely free, except for some special search features we’re going to discuss later on. We hope this will be fixed in the next version.Īvailable since the fall of 2004, GrabIt has been around for over 10 years now, and is still one of the most recommended newsreaders. The only downside is that Internet connections with more than 100 Mbps are not always maxed out, due to inefficient usage of the hard drive. Some old-school Usenet users might enjoy header support, allowing you to manually browse through groups, and the posting feature for text groups, if you’re among the good folks who use Usenet for discussions.īackup servers are supported, so if you’re more of an experienced user who likes to add a secondary server, you can do that too.Īll in all, a good newsreader for everybody. You can use GrabIt in the simplest way possible, which is just creating an NZB from any search engine you like and letting it do its job, or the build-in search engine. It supports SSL encryption, NZBs, automatically repairs and extracts your downloads, and all the other good stuff, like automatically shutting down your computer after completing its job. GrabIt is a free newsreader for PC / Windows, and has all the features most people need to download binaries from Usenet with ease. That was what she missed the most when Harold passed away – their beautiful music. She sang and played guitar alongside her husband throughout their almost 65 years of marriage. Music was a big part of her life, both while growing up and into her married life. From the time of her birth to the time of her death, Ruth nourished those around her with her unconditional love and music.
